Ozu Castle
Ozu, Japan
Ozu Castle, located in Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture, Japan, is a historic hilltop castle with origins tracing back to the early 14th century. Built initially by Utsunomiya Toyofusa, the castle was strategically positioned on a hill overlooking the Hijikawa River, benefiting from natural defenses and controlling important transportation routes.
Over the centuries, it changed hands among several feudal lords and was expanded notably during the late 16th to early 17th centuries, with significant contributions from the famed castle architect Todo Takatora. The original main keep was demolished in the late 19th century due to deterioration, but a faithful reconstruction using traditional wood techniques was completed in 2004, making it one of the few Japanese castles rebuilt mainly in wood rather than modern materials.
Today, Ozu Castle features a four-story main keep flanked by turrets and offers visitors a glimpse into feudal Japan through exhibits and authentic architecture, along with unique experiences such as castle stays. It stands not only as a symbol of Ozu’s rich history but also as a vibrant cultural site attracting visitors for its scenic location and heritage.
