Paharpur (Somapura Mahavihara)

Naogaon, Rajshahi Division, Bangladesh

---

Paharpur, home to the ancient Somapura Mahavihara in Naogaon, Bangladesh, is one of the most important archaeological and religious sites in South Asia.

Built during the 8th century under the Pala Dynasty, it was a major center of Buddhist learning and one of the largest monasteries in the region. The vast monastery complex features a large central shrine, numerous monks’ cells, courtyards, and beautifully decorated terracotta plaques. Its architectural design was highly influential and helped shape Buddhist temple and monastery construction across parts of Asia, including regions as far as Cambodia.

Recognized as the Ruins of the Buddhist Vihara at Paharpur, the site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Today, Somapura Mahavihara stands as a remarkable symbol of Bangladesh’s ancient cultural and religious heritage, attracting historians, archaeologists, and visitors from around the world.
