Palanok Castle in Mukacheve, Ukraine, stands on a 68-meter volcanic hill as a multi-tiered fortress originating from 10th-11th century wooden defenses, rebuilt in stone by the 14th century under Prince Fedir Koriatovych with expansions into upper, middle, and lower castles featuring 5-meter-thick walls, bastions, an 85-meter well, and secret passages.

It withstood Mongol invasions, served as a key stronghold for Hungarian kings, Transylvanian princes like the Rákóczi family—who modernized it during anti-Habsburg uprisings and endured epic sieges, including Ilona Zrínyi's 1685-1688 defense and Francis II Rákóczi's 1703-1711 war headquarters.

Transitioning from residence to prison in the 18th-20th centuries under Austrian, Czechoslovak, and Soviet rule, it now functions as a historical museum preserving baroque interiors, armory exhibits, and legends of hidden treasures amid Zakarpattia's scenic landscapes.
