Palmela Castle in Palmela, Portugal, is a striking medieval fortress crowning a hilltop at 240 meters above sea level in the scenic Arrábida region, offering sweeping views over the Sado River estuary, Setúbal, and the Atlantic.

Initially fortified by Moors in the 8th-10th centuries with a rectangular citadel, horseshoe arches, and robust towers using Islamic bonding techniques, it was first conquered by Portugal's King Afonso Henriques in 1147, though retaken by Almohads before Sancho I secured it permanently in 1186.

Expanded in the 14th century under Dinis I with a Gothic keep and later by João I, it became the headquarters of the Order of Santiago in 1443, evolving into a religious-military hub with the Igreja de Santiago church amid three tiers of irregular polygonal walls and square-circular towers.

Partially ruined after the 1755 earthquake, the national monument now blends ruins, a historic pousada hotel, and lush gardens, captivating visitors with its layered Islamic-Christian architecture and panoramic vistas.
