Panteão dos Almeida
Abrantes, Portugal, Portugal
Panteão dos Almeida is a historic Gothic church known as Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo within Abrantes Castle, central Portugal, originally built in 1215 by King Afonso II on a former Moorish mosque site to fulfill Afonso Henriques' vow.
Rebuilt between 1433-1451 by D. Diogo Fernandes de Almeida, alcaide-mor of Abrantes, it became the family pantheon housing tombs of key figures like D. Lopo de Almeida (first Count of Abrantes), D. João de Almeida (second Count), D. António de Almeida, and D. Rodrigo Anes de Almeida Meneses (first Marquis), featuring 16th-century Hispano-Mudejar azulejos, a schist pulpit, and Manueline details.
Site of the 1385 war council with D. João I and Nuno Álvares Pereira before Aljubarrota, it ceased religious use in 1834, served as a museum from 1921, was declared a National Monument in 1910, and reopened in 2021 after restoration as a musealized pantheon highlighting Almeida lineage.
