Penas Róias' Castle
Portugal, Portugal
Penas Róias' Castle is a ruined 12th-century Romanesque fortress in the village of Penas Roias, Mogadouro municipality, Bragança district, northern Portugal's Trás-os-Montes region, near the Spanish border. Originally possibly a pre-Roman castro or Muslim stronghold, it was donated to the Knights Templar in 1145 by Fernão Mendes de Bragança under Afonso Henriques, with construction starting around 1166-1172 under Master Gualdim Pais, including a prominent keep tower marked by an inscription. Granted a charter by Afonso III in 1272-1273, it passed to the Order of Christ after 1319, the Távoras family in 1457, and declined into ruin by 1758 despite Manuel I's 1512 foral; today, it stands as a National Monument since 1945 amid overgrown walls and traces of a vanished village enclosure.
