Phnom Bakheng Temple
Angkor, Siem Reap, Cambodia
Phnom Bakheng Temple, perched atop a 65-meter hill in the Angkor Archaeological Park near Siem Reap, Cambodia, is a 9th-century Hindu temple-mountain dedicated to Shiva, constructed by King Yasovarman I as the centerpiece of his new capital Yasodharapura.
Symbolizing Mount Meru with its five-tiered pyramid base rising to five central towers in a quincunx pattern—originally surrounded by 108 smaller shrines representing cosmic elements—it later became a Buddhist site with added statues now mostly lost.
Famous for sunset views over Angkor Wat and Tonle Sap Lake, the site features steep climbs, ornate lintels with floral motifs, and satellite shrines, drawing visitors despite erosion and crowds managed by limits.
