Pico Cão Grande is one of the most famous natural landmarks in São Tomé and Príncipe, located in the southern part of São Tomé Island within Parque Natural Obô de São Tomé.

This dramatic needle-shaped rock formation is a volcanic plug, created when magma hardened inside an ancient volcanic vent and the surrounding rock gradually eroded away over millions of years. Rising to an elevation of 663 meters above sea level and about 370 meters above the surrounding rainforest, the peak towers over the landscape and is instantly recognizable for its steep, almost vertical sides.

Its striking appearance has made it one of the most photographed and iconic sights in the country. Surrounded by lush tropical forest and rich biodiversity, Pico Cão Grande attracts nature lovers, photographers, hikers, and experienced climbers from around the world. Although reaching the summit is extremely challenging, the peak remains a powerful symbol of the island’s volcanic origins and natural beauty.
