Poltava Local Lore Museum
Poltava, Poltava Oblast, Ukraine
The Poltava Local Lore Museum in Poltava, Poltava Oblast, Ukraine, is one of the oldest and largest regional museums in the country, founded in 1891 by soil scientist Vasyl Dokuchaiev as a natural‑history museum for the Poltava province. It is now named after the architect Vasyl Krychevsky and contains about 300,000 artifacts that cover the nature, archeology, history, and ethnography of the Poltava region, including a special “Treasury” hall with its most unique items. The museum is housed in the former provincial zemstvo (local‑government) building, a striking example of Ukrainian Art Nouveau designed by Krychevsky between 1903 and 1908, which features rich folk ornamentation, historic coats of arms of local towns, and interior paintings by notable Ukrainian artists such as Serhii Vasylkivskyi and Mykola Samokysh. Today the museum functions as both a research‑oriented institution and a popular cultural space, preserving and presenting the regional heritage of central‑eastern Ukraine in a landmark building recognized as an architectural monument of national importance.
