Popov Castle
Vasylivka, Ukraine, Ukraine
Popov Castle, also known as Popov Manor House, in Vasylivka, Ukraine, was constructed between 1864 and 1884 by Vasiliy Popov Jr., grandson of General Vasiliy Stepanovich Popov, on lands originally granted by Empress Catherine II, blending Gothic Revival, Neo-Moorish, and Northern Italian Renaissance styles possibly designed by architect Nicholas Benois.
This eclectic palace complex featured a two-story main building with five towers, an art gallery, ethnographic museum, baths, ballroom, library, meteorological station, and power plant amid red-brick structures from Popov's own factories, spanning 2.87 hectares with outbuildings like a Neo-Gothic English Castle and observation tower.
Looted by Bolsheviks post-1917 Revolution, ruined during World War II, and repurposed as a pigsty, school, and hospital under Soviet rule with the main palace dismantled in the 1950s, it became a historical museum-reserve in 1993, suffering further damage and looting by Russian forces in 2022.
