Praia da Memória
Porto, Portugal
Praia da Memória is a historic beach located near Matosinhos in northern Portugal along the Atlantic coast. It is known as the landing site where, on July 8, 1832, Dom Pedro IV led a liberal army of about 7,500 men from the Azores to oppose absolutist forces in the Portuguese Civil War, marking a turning point in the conflict. An obelisk commemorating this event stands near the beach, which is also called the Beach of Memory.
The beach features golden sand, gentle waves, and a dune system, providing a peaceful natural setting not far from Porto’s city center. It is a protected area valued for both its historical significance and natural beauty, making it popular for relaxation and swimming. The nearby obelisk includes engravings honoring commanders and the famous proclamation of Dom Pedro before the landing.
