Praia Grande, which means "large beach" in Portuguese, is a spectacular remote beach on the northeast coast of São Vicente Island in Cape Verde (Cabo Verde), located 1.5 kilometers northwest of the village of Calhau. The beach stretches 1.5 kilometers with white sandy shores backed by massive sand dunes and dramatic black volcanic mountains rising nearly 3,000 feet behind it, creating a stunning landscape where sand carried from Africa by prevailing winds and currents forms an impressive dune system. Praia Grande features azure Atlantic Ocean waters with rolling surf, volcanic rocks surrounding the beach, and a completely desolate, wild atmosphere that remains blissfully uncrowded compared to other tourist destinations. The beach is accessible by road from Calhau and Baía das Gatas, or by car, minibus, or taxi from Mindelo, the island's main city, taking approximately 20 minutes by taxi. The dramatic scenery includes miles of unbelievable beaches, a sea of dunes, and a barren landscape that makes it perfect for dune-backed walks, photography, and water sports like board sports, though visitors should bring their own beach gear as rental services are limited. Early morning visits are recommended for a quieter experience and to enjoy sunrise over the horizon, and the beach offers nearby attractions including Miradouro viewpoint, Baía das Gatas, Monte Verde, and the cultural sites of Mindelo.
