Ptuj Castle, situated on a hill above the town of Ptuj in Slovenia’s Drava Region, dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries and was originally built as a medieval fortress to defend the area when Ptuj was part of the Archdiocese of Salzburg.

Over centuries, it evolved architecturally from a Romanesque stronghold to a Baroque manor under various owners, including the Lords of Ptuj, the Scottish Leslie family, and the Counts of Herberstein. The castle houses a rich collection of art, furniture, and historical artifacts, including significant archaeological finds from the Roman era, reflecting Ptuj’s ancient historical importance.

Architecturally, it features elements like fortified towers, Renaissance courtyards, arcades, and vaulting, blending medieval defense with later Renaissance and Baroque elegance. The castle also incorporates relics and stones from earlier eras, making it a museum showcasing local heritage and cultural history. Its commanding position offers panoramic views of Ptuj and the surrounding region, making it a major historical and cultural landmark.
