Verified Puck's Castle

Republic of Ireland, Ireland

Puck's Castle is a castle ruin located in Rathmichael, County Dublin, Ireland, believed to have been built around 1537 by Peter Talbot as part of a series of defensive structures along the Pale to protect against incursions by the O'Toole clan.

The name comes from the Celtic spirit "Púca," linked to local legends that the castle is haunted. It is said to have provided refuge to King James II and his fleeing army after his defeat at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The castle is mostly in ruins today, with only some features like a stone stairwell and a fireplace still visible.

A notable local mystery is the disappearance of Jane Eleanor Sherrard in 1867 near the castle, which remains unsolved. The castle occupies a scenic spot overlooking the Dublin Mountains and the Irish Sea and is part of a historical area with other medieval ruins nearby.
