Pukará de Quitor is an ancient pre-Columbian fortress located about 3 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile.

Built by the Atacameño (Lickanantay) people around the 12th century, it was strategically positioned on a hillside overlooking the San Pedro River valley to protect local communities and their valuable water resources. The fortress consists of stone defensive walls, terraces, storage areas, and living spaces spread across the slope. Its elevated location provided excellent visibility over the surrounding desert and made it easier to defend against potential attackers.

Today, Pukará de Quitor is an important archaeological site and a designated National Monument of Chile. Visitors come to explore its historic ruins, learn about the region’s indigenous heritage, and enjoy panoramic views of the Atacama Desert and the oasis of San Pedro de Atacama.
