Purgly Castle
Romania, Romania
Purgly Castle in Șofronea, Arad County, Romania, originated around 1789 as a manor house on a vast 1,500-hectare estate owned by the Hungarian noble Purgly family, with Baron János Purgly transforming it in 1889 into its current eclectic secessionist style modeled after Hungary's Hunyadi Castle.
Serving as the family's luxurious residence amid agricultural wealth, it passed to his son László, who supported local Lutheran development, until post-WWII communist nationalization led to abandonment and repurposing as a treatment center with thermal pools.
Today, the historic monument stands largely in decay amid flat Banat plains, emblematic of lost aristocratic heritage in western Romania.
