Purtse Castle
Purtse, Estonia, Estonia
Purtse Castle (also called Purtse Fortress Residence or Purtse Vassal Stronghold) is a 16th‑century knight’s castle in Purtse, northeastern Estonia, on the high bank of the Purtse River near the Tallinn–Narva highway, where it stands out clearly for travelers.
The first mention of the estate (Alt Isenhof) dates to 1421, but the stone castle itself was built around 1533 by Jakob (Johann) von Taube as a hybrid between a defensive stronghold and a residential manor rather than a large war fortress. It remained in the Taube family until 1615, then passed to the Fleming, Stackelberg and other Baltic‑German noble families, serving over time as a home, shelter during raids, prison, ice cellar, dairy, grain store and workers’ residence.
The castle was severely damaged during the Livonian War and the Great Northern War, left in ruins by the 1950s, and was fully restored between 1987 and 1990, earning the title of Estonia’s best building in 1991. Today it is a protected cultural monument under state ownership, with a new private owner since 2014, and hosts a medieval‑style restaurant, occasional events and tourist visits from May to September, though some sources note it is mainly viewed from the outside.
