Queen's Staircase
Nassau, New Providence Island, Bahamas
The Queen's Staircase, located in Nassau on New Providence Island in the Bahamas, is one of the country’s most famous historical landmarks.
Carved by enslaved Africans from solid limestone between 1793 and 1794, the staircase was built to provide a direct route between Fort Fincastle and the city below. Originally consisting of 66 steps, it was later named in honor of Queen Victoria, whose reign was associated with the abolition of slavery in the British Empire.
Surrounded by towering limestone walls, tropical vegetation, and a small cascading waterfall, the staircase offers visitors a beautiful and peaceful setting while providing a powerful reminder of the Bahamas’ colonial history.
