Rathcline Castle is a historic castle complex near Lanesborough in County Longford, Ireland.

The site has medieval origins and was originally associated with local Gaelic families, including the O’Quinns and later the O’Farrells. Over time, it developed into a large fortified residence that combined defensive structures with the comforts of a grand manor house. In the 17th century, Sir Thomas Dutton and later Sir George Lane expanded and remodeled the estate, creating an impressive fortified manor surrounded by walls, towers, gardens, orchards, fishponds, and a deer park.

Contemporary accounts described it as a spacious and elegant residence with richly furnished rooms. The castle was severely damaged during the wars of the late 17th century and gradually fell into ruin. Today, the surviving walls, towers, and remnants of the fortified enclosure provide an important glimpse into Ireland’s medieval and early modern history, making Rathcline Castle one of County Longford’s most notable historic sites.
