Verified Remains of Karasawasan Castle

Sano, Japan, Japan

The Remains of Karasawasan Castle, more commonly known as Karasawayama Castle, are located on a mountain overlooking Sano in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.

Traditionally founded in 927 and later expanded by the Sano clan, the fortress was regarded as one of the strongest mountain castles in the Kantō region due to its commanding position and excellent natural defenses. During the Sengoku (Warring States) period, the castle became famous for withstanding repeated attacks from the powerful warlord Uesugi Kenshin.

Its extensive stone walls, dry moats, and defensive enclosures made it a formidable stronghold and one of the “Seven Great Castles of Kantō.” The castle was abandoned in 1602, and today only its ruins remain. Visitors can explore impressive stonework, fortifications, and scenic walking trails, while the site’s main enclosure is now occupied by Karasawayama Shrine.
