Verified Remains of Sekiyado Castle

Noda, Japan

Sekiyado Castle, located in Noda, Japan, was originally built in the mid-15th century and held great strategic importance due to its position at the confluence of the Tone and Edogawa Rivers, controlling river traffic in the northern Kantō region.

The castle faced destruction during the late 1500s by the Go-Hōjō clan but was rebuilt around 1590 under Tokugawa rule to help defend Edo from northern clan threats. In the 17th century, major river engineering projects changed the course of the Tone River, which affected trade routes. The castle’s lord constructed a canal linking the Tone and Edogawa rivers, greatly improving transportation and benefiting both the castle town and Edo (modern Tokyo).

The main castle building, reconstructed in 1671 with a design inspired by a notable tower in Edo Castle, was later dismantled following the Meiji Restoration reforms in the 1870s. Today, only the remains remain at the original site, with a reconstructed donjon built in 1995 nearby serving as a museum and tourist attraction, although it does not sit on the original foundations nor fully replicate the original structures.
