Riffa Fort, also known as Sheikh Salman Bin Ahmed Al Fateh Fort, is a historic landmark located in Riffa, within the Southern Governorate of Bahrain. The fort sits on a high cliff and offers beautiful views over the Hunanaiya Valley, separating East Riffa from West Riffa.

The original fort in this area dates back to the 17th century, but the current structure was built in 1812 by Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Fateh Al Khalifa. It served as both a residence for the ruling family and a defensive stronghold. This fort was an important seat of government and has a significant place in Bahrain’s history. For some time, it was the home of the Al Khalifa family, and Sheikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, a former ruler, was born here.

Riffa Fort is made up of high walls, towers, and spacious courtyards. It has two circular and two rectangular towers, with the main gate located in the northeastern tower. The rooms in the fort were used for daily life, storage, and official purposes. Inside, there is a mosque and a well, which were essential for those living within the fortress. 

The fort has been restored and is well maintained. It now includes a small museum showcasing the history of the Al Khalifa family, traditional Bahraini crafts, and displays related to falconry and horse breeding. There is also a popular café on the site, offering visitors a relaxing place with stunning views of the valley.

Riffa Fort is a favorite spot for both locals and tourists looking to explore Bahrain’s culture and history. The fort’s strategic position allowed its residents to control the valley and watch over the surrounding area. Through its preservation, it serves as a reminder of the country’s royal heritage and architectural skills.
