Rockfleet Castle is a 16th-century tower house located on the shores of Clew Bay in County Mayo, Ireland.
Also known as Carraig a' Chabhlaigh, meaning “Rock of the Fleet,” it is most famous for its association with Gráinne Ní Mháille, or Grace O'Malley, the renowned Irish chieftain and seafarer often called the “Pirate Queen.” Built as a fortified residence overlooking a sheltered inlet, the castle served as an important base for Grace O'Malley and her fleet.
From here she controlled maritime trade routes and defended her interests against rivals and English authorities during the late 16th century. The four-storey castle remains one of County Mayo’s most iconic historic landmarks. Standing beside the water and surrounded by the scenery of Clew Bay, it is believed by many to have been the place where Grace O'Malley died in 1603, adding to its enduring historical significance.
