Situated near the ancient site of Gotland's thing assembly, it grew prosperous with extensive landholdings across the island and into the Baltic states like Saaremaa and Estonia, serving as a key religious and agricultural center.
Dissolved during the Reformation around 1531 under Danish rule, its lands became a crown estate; a manor house was built in 1733 using abbey materials, and today the ruins host summer theater amid a unique cultural landscape owned by Sweden's National Property Board.
