Ruínas do Castelo de Moreira de Rei
Portugal, Portugal
Ruínas do Castelo de Moreira de Rei are the evocative remains of a medieval fortress perched on a granite outcrop overlooking the village of Moreira de Rei in Trancoso municipality, Guarda district, northeastern Portugal, near the Côa River valley.
Originating from prehistoric castro settlements possibly romanized, with a 10th-century reference as Moraria donated by D. Flâmula Rodrigues to Guimarães Monastery, it was conquered from the Moors by Fernando I of León in 1055, received a charter from Afonso Henriques, and saw defensive reconstructions under Sancho II before declining mid-13th century.
Confirmed by Afonso II in 1217 and granted a Manueline foral in 1512, the ruins feature surviving wall stretches, the rock-hewn Cadeira d’El-Rei throne, cistern traces, and nearby medieval necropolis, classified a National Monument since 1932 with 1940s consolidations.
