Ruins of Chihaya Castle
Chihayaakasaka, Osaka, Japan, Japan
Chihaya Castle, located in Chihayaakasaka, Osaka, Japan, was built in 1331 by Kusunoki Masashige during the Genkō War as a defense against the Kamakura shogunate.
It was situated on a narrow ridge about 150 meters high with steep cliffs and rivers protecting its sides, making it extremely defensible. The castle featured five enclosures spread along the ridge, dry moats, wooden walls, and movable bridges to hinder attackers. Kusunoki Masashige famously defended the castle against a much larger shogunate army by using guerrilla tactics such as rolling boulders and trees over the attacking forces and employing straw dummies as decoys.
Despite being heavily outnumbered, the defenders’ strong resistance forced the attackers to abandon direct assault attempts during a prolonged siege. The castle was abandoned after being overtaken in 1392. Today, only ruins remain with Chihaya Shrine built on the site, and it is recognized as a National Historic Site and listed among Japan’s Top 100 Castles for its historical and cultural significance.
