Ruins of Takasaki-jō Castle
Takasaki, Japan
Takasaki Castle was built in 1597 by Ii Naomasa on the site of the earlier Wada Castle ruins near Takasaki in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. It was strategically placed at the crossroads of important trade routes, leading to the growth of a castle town around it. The castle was expanded over 77 years from 1619 by Andō Shigenobu and his descendants, who added features including a three-story main keep.
Tokugawa Tadanaga was exiled here in 1633 and forced to commit seppuku. After the Meiji Restoration, the castle's buildings were dismantled or sold, leaving only some structures like the Inui Yagura turret and a gate, which were later relocated. The site now includes earthworks, moats, and surviving gates and turrets, serving as a historic park in Takasaki City.
