It began as a Portuguese fortified base in the 1590s, was later taken by the Dutch, and then rebuilt by the British in 1817 as a stone fort with two bastions. Today, it stands as a historic reminder of Sri Lanka’s colonial past, and the site is now used for local administrative and police purposes.
