Sabugal Castle
Portugal, Portugal
Sabugal Castle, known as Castelo das Cinco Quinas for its rare pentagonal keep tower, is a Gothic fortress in Sabugal, Guarda district, northeastern Portugal, rising on a Serra da Malcata plateau overlooking the Côa River.
Originally a Leonese stronghold conquered by King Dinis in 1296 and secured via the 1297 Treaty of Alcanices, Dinis rebuilt it with high granite walls, five square corner towers, a double enclosure, and cisterns to bolster the frontier against Castile.
Restored under Manuel I around 1515 with ornate royal arms above the entrance, it served as a prison during the Restoration Wars and British-Portuguese base in the 1811 Peninsular War Battle of Sabugal before partial ruin, now a well-preserved national monument offering valley views.
