San Carlos de la Barra Fortress
Zulia State (Maracaibo Lake), Venezuela
San Carlos de la Barra Fortress is a 17th-century star-shaped fort located on the San Carlos Peninsula in Zulia State, Venezuela, at the entrance to Lake Maracaibo. Built in 1623 using limestone from nearby Toas Island, its main purpose was to protect the vital waterway that connects Lake Maracaibo with the Gulf of Venezuela, guarding against frequent pirate attacks that had previously sacked the town of Maracaibo.
Throughout history, the fortress witnessed significant events including attacks and occupations by pirates like Jean David Nau and Henry Morgan, and played a role in Venezuela's War of Independence with Admiral José Prudencio Padilla's forces capturing it in 1823. Later, during the Venezuelan crisis of 1902–03, it resisted bombardment by the Imperial German Navy.
Over time, the fortress also served as a prison, and today it stands as an important historic site reflecting Venezuela's colonial and military heritage.
