The São Sebastião Museum, also known as the National Museum of São Tomé and Príncipe, occupies a 16th-century Portuguese fortress built in 1566 in São Tomé City to defend the port against pirate raids, featuring a lighthouse added in 1866 and rebuilt in 1928, with restorations in the late 1950s transforming it into a museum by 1976.

Nestled at the southeastern end of Ana Chaves Bay in the city's northeastern center, it houses an eclectic collection of colonial-era artifacts, religious art like sculptures and paintings, historical photographs, and items reflecting Portugal's rule over the islands from their 15th-century discovery through independence in 1975. 

Visitors explore dimly lit rooms evoking plantation life, slavery's legacy, and cultural evolution in this compact site offering bay views, though guides enhance the Portuguese-labeled exhibits for deeper context on the nation's equatorial heritage.
