Sarajevo
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Sarajevo is the capital and cultural center of Bosnia and Herzegovina, set in a narrow valley along the Miljacka River at the foot of Mount Trebević.
It is known for its mix of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and modern influences, especially around the Baščaršija old market area and its many mosques, churches, and historic streets. The city is also historically important because the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand there in 1914 helped trigger World War I, and it later suffered heavy damage during the 1990s war before being rebuilt.
