Sasayama Castle Oshoin
Sasayama, Japan, Japan
Sasayama Castle Oshoin is a large wooden building constructed in 1609 alongside Sasayama Castle in Hyogo, Japan.
It was destroyed by fire in 1944 and rebuilt in 2000 with careful research into historical documents and excavation findings to faithfully reproduce its original early Edo period design. The building is comparable in scale and style to the Ninomaru Palace of Kyoto's Nijo Castle, featuring a floor area of 739.33 square meters, a height of 12.88 meters, a gabled roof with wooden shingles, and an elegant interior with a raised floor area that served as a prestigious formal space.
The Oshoin functioned as the political and administrative center of Sasayama Castle, exhibiting grandeur that reflects the castle's status despite lacking a traditional tower or keep. Today, it serves as a museum displaying the history of Sasayama Castle, the feudal domain, and the castle town, preserving the cultural heritage of the region.
