Schloss Burg im Leimental
Burg im Leimental, Switzerland, Switzerland
Schloss Burg im Leimental is a 13th-century castle in the village of Burg im Leimental, canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, originally built around 1250 and rebuilt after 1600 as a residence.
First mentioned in 1168 as Biedertan in connection with nearby Alt-Biederthal Castle, it passed from Habsburg ownership in 1168 to the prince-bishopric of Basel by 1269, later inhabited by the Lords of Wessenberg from 1392.
Looted during the Thirty Years' War, sold to private citizens in 1810, and changed cantons multiple times, the castle with its chapel stands as a Swiss heritage site of national significance amid the scenic Jura landscape near the French border.
