Sfântu Gheorghe is a city in Covasna County, central Romania, serving as the administrative center of the Székely Land region in Transylvania with a majority ethnic Hungarian population.

Human settlement traces date to the Stone Age and Neolithic periods, but the town was first documented in 1332 as having an independent diocese named after Saint George, its patron saint, officially gaining city status in 1461 amid medieval trade and craft development.

Devastated by Tatar attacks in 1658 and Ottoman-Turkish invasions in 1661 that nearly wiped out its population, it recovered through the 19th century with industrialization like the first regional textile factory in 1879, electrification by 1907, and railway connection from 1897, while playing a heroic role in the 1848 Revolution against Austrian rule.

Today a cultural hub with the National Székely Museum founded in 1879, an orphanage, hospital, and vibrant traditions, it became a municipality in 1982 after administrative changes.
