Shacks Beach, also called “Shacks,” is a small, secluded beach in Isabela on Puerto Rico’s northwest coast known primarily for having some of the best snorkeling in Puerto Rico.

The beach features warm Caribbean waters, sun-baked sand, and a rocky, windy shoreline with only a small sandy entry point on the left where visitors should enter the water. Its main attraction is outstanding snorkeling through massive underwater caves and tunnels, including two large “blue holes” surrounded by living hard coral, sea fans, and diverse fish like blue tangs, peacock flounder, squid, and even barracuda.

The reef has abundant coral species but is very shallow with strong currents, making it dangerous for inexperienced swimmers, and sea urchins are widespread in rock crevices even in the shallows. While the beach itself is limited for relaxing due to its rocky nature and wind, it draws surfers, kiteboarders, sailors, and dive enthusiasts, and is considered one of Puerto Rico’s best-kept secrets with minimal development along its eight-mile stretch of undeveloped coastline.

Visitors should only explore caves if they are confident swimmers, snorkel with a buddy, check conditions carefully, and ideally go with a guide, especially since calm seas are required for safe visiting.
