Shimashi Ozato Castle Ruins
Okinawa, Japan
Shimashi Ozato Castle Ruins, also known as Ōzato Castle, is a 14th-century Ryukyuan gusuku located in Nanjō, Okinawa, Japan. It was built by the chief of Shimashi Ozato, who controlled the Shimajiri region, and served as a political and military center during the era of the Nanzan Kingdom until its fall in 1429. The castle is strategically situated with its strong walls built against a cliff, making use of the natural landscape for defense.
The ruins today include enclosures, worship sites called utaki, tombs, and paths, reflecting its cultural and historical importance. Excavations have found Chinese ceramics, indicating trade links with Ming China. Despite being less visited than other Okinawan castles, the site offers scenic views and remains a valued historical and family-friendly outdoor destination. It was designated as a historical site by Nanjō City in 2003.
