Verified Shindan Castle

Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan

Shindan Castle (also spelled Shindan or Shandan Fortress) is a medieval stone fortress situated on top of Shindan Mountain in the Talysh Mountains near the border between Azerbaijan’s Astara region and northern Iran, at an altitude of about 1,820–1,850 meters above sea level.

Its origins are pre‑Islamic, with some sources suggesting that the fortress was founded in the 3rd century AD during the Sassanid period, and archaeological and historical references connect it to the 6th–7th centuries and later medieval times, meaning it was used for more than a thousand years, possibly until the 17th century.

The castle covers roughly one hectare, with stone walls reinforced by semicircular towers that once protected the mountain top and controlled trade routes through the region, and its name is mentioned in medieval texts in connection with the Babak movement, with some traditions even claiming that Babak himself stayed there at some point.

In later centuries, Shindan Castle served as a refuge and stronghold for various local rulers: it is associated with the revolt of Talysh Hamza Khan of Astara against Shah Abbas, with the conflict between Mehranli Isa Khan and Musa Khan, and is said to be the burial place of Isa Khan and Musa Khan inside the fortress.
