Shiroishi Castle
Miyagi, Japan
Shiroishi Castle in Miyagi, Japan, is a historic flatland-style castle originally founded during the Kamakura period by the Karita clan and rebuilt in 1591 by the Gamō clan.
It became the residence of the Katakura clan, hereditary retainers of the powerful Date clan of the Sendai Domain during the Edo period. The castle played a strategic role during the Boshin War as the headquarters of the Ōuetsu Reppan Dōmei, a northern alliance opposing the Meiji government.
The original structures were demolished in 1875 but were faithfully reconstructed in 1995 using traditional materials and techniques. The castle features a three-story main keep with stone walls built by ancient methods and detailed craftsmanship reflecting its historic significance. Today, it is a popular cultural site with a museum, samurai home, and immersive exhibits showcasing the history of the Date clan and the castle's role in Japan’s feudal era.
