Shums'k
Ukraine, Ukraine
Shumsk, Ukraine, is a small city in Kremenets Raion, Ternopil Oblast, first documented in the 12th century as a settlement on the Viliya River within historic Volhynia, serving as a trade crossroads between larger centers like Kremenets and Ostrog.
It developed under Polish rule from the 16th century, gaining prominence for grain trade, flour mills powered by river water, and a vibrant Jewish community that built synagogues and a beit-midrash by the 18th century, peaking at over 1,100 Jews by 1897 amid tailoring and commerce with local farmers.
Annexed by the Soviet Union in 1939, it endured Nazi occupation with ghetto establishment and mass executions of 1,792 Jews in August 1942, later reverting to Ukrainian control post-1991 while preserving sites like the Immaculate Conception Church and remnants of its multicultural past in a population now around 5,300.
