Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden
Pamplemousses, Northwest Mauritius, Mauritius
The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden is a famous and historical garden in the village of Pamplemousses, in the northwest of Mauritius. It is the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere and covers an area of about 37 hectares. The garden is close to Port Louis, the island’s capital, making it easy to visit for both locals and tourists.
The garden was first started in the 18th century by the French. Pierre Poivre, a French botanist, helped create it in 1770. Over time, the garden has grown to include plants from all over the world. Its name honors Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, Mauritius’ first prime minister.
One of the key attractions is the long pond filled with giant water lilies, called Victoria amazonica. These water lilies have large, flat leaves that can reach up to 2 meters across. The garden also has many types of palm trees—over 85 varieties from Central America, Asia, Africa, and the Indian Ocean islands. You can also see baobab trees, ebonies, sugar canes, and plants used for spices and medicine.
Apart from its plant collections, the garden contains interesting features like the main gate made of wrought iron, the Pont des Soupirs (a stone bridge), and ponds with lotus flowers. Visitors can also spot deer and giant Aldabra tortoises. The gardens are calm and well maintained, offering a relaxing place for walking and learning about the unique natural life of Mauritius.
Many world leaders and famous people have planted trees in the garden during visits. This tradition helps make the place special and connects it to world history. The garden also serves as a place for conservation, research, and education on plant life.
