Șiria Fortress
Șiria, Romania, Romania
Șiria Fortress in Șiria, Arad County, Romania, is a 13th-century medieval stronghold built on Citadel Hill at 496 meters, initially constructed after the Mongol invasions by King Béla IV to protect western Transylvania's trade routes and borders.
Owned by nobles like Paul, Ban of Severin (1272-1275), it became a royal citadel under Charles Robert of Anjou after 1315, was rebuilt by John Hunyadi (1440-1446), and passed to the Bathory family in the late 15th century before brief occupation by Gheorghe Doja's peasant rebels in 1514.
Captured by Ottomans mid-16th century, recaptured by Michael the Brave (1599-1600), reoccupied by Turks until 1693, and strategically demolished by Habsburg troops in 1784 to prevent revolutionary use, its ruins preserve Renaissance architectural traces amid the Mureș Valley landscape.
