Skalat Castle
Skalat, Ukraine, Ukraine
Skalat Castle in Skalat, Ukraine, traces its origins to early fortifications around 1503, likely wooden with earthen ramparts, but the current stone structure was built in 1630 by Krzysztof Wichrowski as a nearly square defensive complex surrounded by a moat and featuring pentagonal four-tiered towers at the corners with keyhole-shaped loopholes.
It endured destruction during the Khmelnytsky Uprising and the Polish-Turkish War of 1672-1675, later rebuilt by Jan Firlej in 1699 into a residence with an internal palace, and further reconstructed in the late 18th century by Maria Szyńonowa with a two-story palace addition, plus neo-Gothic enhancements by architect Theodor Talowski in the late 19th century.
Damaged in the world wars, the ruins were preserved in 1960 and now form part of the "Castles of Ternopil Region" National Reserve, featuring cleared grounds, art galleries, historical exhibits on fortress weaponry, a prison display, and walkways offering town panoramas, with events like knightly festivals.
