Smithstown Castle, also known as Ballynagowan Castle, is a medieval tower house located near Kilshanny in County Clare, Ireland.

Dating from the 15th or 16th century, it was originally associated with the powerful O’Brien family and played an important role in the history of North Clare. Over the centuries, the castle witnessed many significant events, including visits by the Irish leader Hugh Roe O’Donnell and occupation by Cromwellian forces during the 17th century.

It later passed through several prominent families and remained inhabited until the 19th century. Today, Smithstown Castle is a well-preserved example of Irish tower-house architecture. Its thick stone walls, historic features, and scenic rural setting offer visitors a glimpse into Ireland’s medieval past and the lives of the families who once lived there.
