Commissioned by Emperor Menelik II in 1896 to celebrate Ethiopia's victory over Italian invaders at the Battle of Adwa—where St. George's icon was carried into combat—this neoclassical structure was completed in 1911 with contributions from Greek, Armenian, and Indian artists, featuring vibrant interior murals, mosaics by Afewerk Tekle, and a replica of the Ark of the Covenant.

It served as the coronation site for Empress Zewditu in 1916 and Emperor Haile Selassie in 1930, and today houses a small museum displaying royal artifacts, crowns, and Ethiopian Orthodox history, drawing visitors for its cultural and spiritual significance.
