Staraya Ladoga
Russia, Russia
Staraya Ladoga, located in Leningrad Oblast, Russia, near the Volkhov River's mouth into Lake Ladoga, is one of Eastern Europe's oldest settlements, established around 753 AD as a vital trade hub on routes "from the Varangians to the Greeks," blending Slavic, Norse, and Finnish influences.
According to chronicles, Varangian prince Rurik ruled here from 862 before moving to Novgorod, his successor Oleg built the first stone fortress around 880 (destroyed in 997), and it later became a Novgorod Republic outpost with a massive 1114 kremlin that repelled Swedish attacks in 1164.
By the 15th-16th centuries under Ivan the Terrible, its military role waned as fishing dominated, leading to relocation to Novaya Ladoga in 1704, but remnants like the five-cornered fortress, stone churches of St. George, St. Peter, and others preserve its legacy as Russia's "first capital."
