Khotyn Fortress, a sprawling State Historical and Architectural Reserve in Khotyn, Ukraine, on the Dniester River's right bank, traces its roots to the 13th century when Prince Danylo of Halych rebuilt an earlier site with stone walls, a wide moat, and northern ramparts to counter invasions.

Expanded in the 15th century by Moldavian ruler Stephen the Great into a massive citadel with 40-meter-high walls, towers, palaces, and chapels adorned in red brick motifs, it endured epic battles like the 1621 Polish-Ottoman clash where forces halted Sultan Osman II's army, cementing its fame as a pivotal European bulwark.

Further fortified by Ottomans in the 18th century with bastions and gates around the core stronghold, this UNESCO tentative site now preserves museums, battle reenactments, and panoramic views as Ukraine's premier fortress ensemble.​
