Stein Castle, Aargau
Switzerland, Switzerland
Stein Castle is a medieval ruin perched on Schlossberg hill above Baden in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland, with origins tracing back to around 1000 when built by the Counts of Lenzburg.
Inherited by the Kyburgs and then Habsburgs in 1263, it once featured a residential tower, palace, triangular courtyard, watchtower, and chapel, serving as a key stronghold until Swiss Confederates besieged and destroyed it in 1415 during Aargau's conquest.
Rebuilt between 1658-1670 after the First Villmerger War, it faced final demolition in 1712 amid the Second Villmerger War, leaving conserved remnants like the watchtower and chapel that offer panoramic views and attract hikers today.
