Sukhothai Historical Park
Mueang Kao, Mueang Sukhothai District, Sukhothai, Thailand, Thailand
Sukhothai Historical Park is Thailand’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving the magnificent ruins of the ancient city that served as the capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom during the 13th and 14th centuries.
The park encompasses the archaeological remains of Thailand’s first independent kingdom, which was founded in 1238 when Thai chieftains overthrew Khmer rule to establish Sukhodaya, meaning “the Dawn of Happiness”. Within the site, you can find over 200 ancient structures including royal palaces, Buddhist temples with chedis and spires, defensive walls, moats, and a sophisticated hydraulic system that sustained the kingdom.
The park is stunning and well-maintained, featuring serene lotus ponds where ancient temple ruins are beautifully reflected. As a center of administration, religion, and economy, ancient Sukhothai was praised for its prosperity and is listed among Thailand’s most important historical heritage sites dating back to the dawn of the Thai Kingdom.
