Swallow's Nest
Gaspra, Ukraine
Swallow's Nest in Gaspra, Ukraine, is a striking Neo-Gothic castle perched on the 40-meter-high Aurora Cliff overlooking the Black Sea, constructed between 1911 and 1912 by Russian architect Leonid Sherwood for Baltic German Baron Pavel von Steingel, who replaced an earlier wooden "Castle of Love" cottage on the site.
Measuring just 20 by 10 meters, this decorative folly features towers, balconies jutting over the cliff edge, and interiors with wooden panels and stuccoed rooms, evoking German fairy-tale castles like Neuschwanstein while surviving a 1927 earthquake that cracked the rock beneath.
Sold in 1914 for use as a restaurant, it later served as a tourist spot and reading club before major 1968 restorations added cliff reinforcements, reopening in 1975 with an Italian eatery that continues today, making it Crimea's iconic symbol near Yalta.
